Evolution of the Malaysian Bloggersphere

For the past 7 years or so, Serge has been blogging even before the word blog became famous in Malaysia and is one of the few people who can safely say that, he is a second generation blogger and the very few who has indirectly influence and is a watcher to the evolution of the Malaysian bloggersphere.

The evolution of which he sees is that of a miracle and an ever changing process when weblogs started to hit it off in a slow manner around the year 2002-2003. For you youngsters, we malaysian bloggers were either on blogspot which was own by Pyra Labs or we were hard coding our weblog using basic html (or php for the hardcore people) on Geocities or other free hosting sites. And let us take note that for those who uses Geocities and the likes, we call our weblogs; personal website.

2004-2005 can be considered the blossoming of weblogs in Malaysia. With TM Net actually giving good broadband speed and yes you heard Serge say it, TM NET ACTUALLY GIVING GOOD BROADBAND SPEED; many more youngsters jump on the wagon and became bloggers. Some of the best Malaysian bloggers are those of this particular year and Serge is proud to say that he knows them.

Moving onward in 2006-2007, we notice that more weblogs sprouting up slowly and from personal weblogs (which was what weblogs are suppose to be) becoming political weblogs, sports weblog, money generating weblogs (thanks to Google Ads). This is the time when internet-savvy people in Malaysia understood the powers that comes with weblogs, however the Malaysian government was still stupidly fucked on the true power of weblogs.

Last year in 2008 we who are the watchers of the Malaysian Bloggersphere saw the biggest upset and the biggest back-handed slap dealt to the then ruling coalition during the general elections. Most of you Malaysians remember and how Barisan Nasional lost like a fail whale, an upset such as this was not cause by an excellent politician but a coalition who understood the fundamental power of what a weblog can do. The Malaysian government has now realized the powers of weblog and how powerful it has become.

It is also in this year that Nuffnang took off and webloggers became money hungry idiots trying to earn money from advertising. Though there is nothing wrong with earning some income via weblogging, it is sad to see that the weblogs that is sprouting in 2008 does not have content worthy items and is just a money making machine.

Now in the year 2009, Serge will continue to watch the malaysian bloggersphere of the political scene as well as on a personal level. Our world is changing and the rules of engagement has change as well.
