A Rather Peculiar Urbanscapes 2009
Yesterday was one of the biggest art festivals in Malaysia and that is Urbanscapes. This event is held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center at Sentul West. Arts in the form of music, art and theater all converge into this location. Here is where independent young artiste and artiste who has already make their mark come together to get you and upcoming artiste such as yourself to see that the art scene in Malaysia can be as good as the international market. Serge is here at this venue for the N time and this is how he hit the groove, jumped the hurdle and slam dunk the event with dark chocolates, drumming beats and chocolate banana cake!

We begin with Serge leaving his online connection and arrived at Sentul LRT at about 1245hrs and there he met this pretty girl and later on Suresh came and the three of them left with the shuttle van. Arrival to Urbanscapes was at about 1400hrs and with the tickets collected, Serge gave the two virgins a quick rundown of what Urbanscapes is about and which section is where and what they are all about.
Like with the previous year, Serge sees old faces and one of them was Albert Ng and with him in the picture, Serge knew that Jason, Jennifer and Rames will be here as well. Shaz and the usual golden age of Xfresh gang was here and Serge and them talked. The awesomely cute and funny Zoe is here too! and Serge must not forget about the scones.
He then went to the Sunset Stage and listened to a performance by a band who mention that if your mum is a pig and your dad is a pig, you’re definitely a pig as well. Hilarious to say the least. Serge also saw the awesome June Loh and talk to her for roughly 180 seconds, he hasn’t seen her for nearly a year now and she is still pretty as ever.
Serge band of Urbanscapes virgins and non-virgins of the day was enjoying themselves, people such as Cincau Hangus, Joshua Ong, Hsu Jen, Kellster, Nigel Sia, Simon Seow, Ceyan, Hitomi, Thomas Yap and others which Serge knows came and in his conversation with Suresh after Urbanscapes can be sum up with the following sentence :
“Every 10 minutes of walking, you will bump into someone you know and talk to them for 5 minutes before the process is repeated”
–Suresh
As a person who loves performing arts, Serge spent a good amount of time watching Rather Peculiar Theatre and The Oral Stage. The skit from RPT is just awesome with jokes about being fat, a contact center, to a pacemaker that will stop working if a person laugh and to a pregnant women who gives birth to a baby boy and names him Abdullah Hukum based on the train station that they were at.
For The Oral Stage, they did an impromptu whereby the crowd will suggest a scene and the actors and actresses is to pose that scene. Scenes such as Getting High, Statue of Liberty brought into Port Klang, Chun Li versus Goku, Samy Vellu builds the Highway, You gotta go but there is no toilet in sight, Mahathir in his most productive hour, Little Red Riding Hood EATS the big bad wolf and many other scenes. The crowd who was watching this laughed their head off and this is to Serge one of the best event for Urbanscapes 2009.
As he knew some of the people in RPT and Oral Stage, he took the opportunity to talk to them before Serge left the outdoor theatre to go to the X-Lawn and listen to the band playing at that time and they, whoever they might be; played well. After listening to two songs he moved on to the Box and then to the theatre. Oh man, how can Serge forget that he was performing at Urbanscapes too!
Yes, he was with Cincau Hangus on kompang and Serge on Bass Drums for a good 10 minutes and our wrist and palm was hurting madly. This is a different experience for Serge as last year he was caught in the middle of RPT’s performance and this year he was surrounded by a lot of people. After drumming, Serge met this cute awesome friend of Cincau Hangus name Denise and now Serge wonders if the Cincau remembers what Serge’s real name is.
It’s close to night time and only now Jessica came and we the misfits had a quick meal and chocolate banana cake. As not to miss the train, Serge left early at about 2100hrs. This years Urbanscapes 2009 wasn’t as good as last years one, something felt missing from it. There was much art and that is really sad, even though the films that they had screening is exceptional…Serge felt empty. Probably this is due to the fact that the outdoor stage play was held between two music events that was drowning them out. Anyway, this year Serge gives Urbanscapes 2009 an 8/10 stars.
