SINGFest 2008 Postlude
By Serge Norguard. Filed in Events, Musicology, Personal, Relationship/Romance |[this is a heavy image laden post]
First and foremost, apologies for the lack of update. Serge had Defcon-1 on his server and was being pinned down by the agents from Area 51. After much good cop - bad cop dealings that is shadier than your Gan Sakura’s bushy legs, Serge manage to escape and will now talk about his awesome adventures in Singapore which dates from August 2nd to the 4th.
The 2nd was a Friday of which Serge was working until the time of 1430hrs. The bus to Singapore was at 1730hrs. Three hours to mutilate and no justice system can get him for that. So he did just that by warming his ass in the office, disturbing some of his old colleagues before heading off to the bus station.
The bus left some what punctual and that is a good thing, even with the customs and all the jazz; Serge arrived in Singapore at about 2330hrs of which the final landing was closed to midnight. We stopped near Elizabeth Street which was a walking distance to Bugis and being Friday night getting a taxi was hard…but he got one.
Fast forward to Saturday. Arrived at Fort Canning Park at about 1100hrs. The line from the gate to where Serge was standing is looong, one could circle the whole of Singapore at it’s circumference with the amount of people for Day 1 of SINGFest.

Once the gate was open we rushed in like walked in an orderly manner that makes Serge an undercover patriot for Singapore. Malaysians should learn from Singapore even though they might be kiasu/kiasi people.
At the main stage where all the nice popular artiste were, the stage where they played is not fancy and yet for those who were there, you cannot stop saying that it is just awesome. Serge thinks that way and you could too.

The first performance was by the group known as Dearest. Being form in 2006 their catalogue of is something and even though Serge has not heard of this group and some of the other groups thanks to the influence of irritable Malaysian government, this is not a bad group at all. Somewhere during the end of their performance the lead vocalist and lead guitarist climbed up the stage’s scaffolding.

Second act was by Crown King, of which this is their 2nd time in Singapore. Again Serge would love to screw his government again. Those fucktards. Anyhow one of the guitarist has an awesome girl-boyish look which is very yaoi desu. Somewhere in their play they had bass issues.

Melanie Subono came next and hailing from Indonesia, her tunes was not to Serge’s liking. But hey, she did well and she was really love by the crowd and the crowd loves her and that is a plus point in Serge’s books. On a given note she is the ambassador for her country’s anti-drug campaign.

Tattoo maniac of New Found Glory came and it is only in Singapore can you get a chubby half naked guitarist playing, and people will scream for him. For serge’s case, people will run far and wide and even Satan will say that he (Serge) is the ultimate sin and should never ever go topless. New Found Glory has been in the music scene for a long time but this is their first time in Singapore.
During their play, Vinesh from the crowd was invited up to play on their guitar. Congratulations to Vinesh as you actually rock. Inner hilarity came as someone tried to throw their pink push-up bra on to the stage and gravity help in letting it fall on some poor fellas head. Poor him/her. Their rendition of Goo Goo Doll’s Iris was actually good though the rendition of Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer was a tad so-so.

Melee’s lead played on the keyboard and they had the good boy look going out for them. Their style of music reminded Serge of the Plain White T’s. Of which this band was the last band to perform before the real acts came about.

Next was the Levi’s fashion show of which no images was taken as it did not interest Serge at all. Watching paint dry, now that is something. With that fashion show over…..we bring out

LOST PROPHETS!!!!… O M F G. For SINGFest 2008 Day 1..this is the band of the night and even though they were not the main event, they were a force to be reckon with. Ian Watkins the lead vocalist for the group is just awesome. Like in most concerts, you have the vocalist trying to get the crowd to sing. At one point he was looking at some one in the crowd and stated…
“You sir have a fuckking awesome moustache!, I bow down in shame”
Before that and the introductory how you doing singapore speech, he thanked the crowd for being here in this “…Colonial Mansion Thingy Place”. This is their first time in Singapore though technically their second as they were in Changi Airport around 0500hrs waiting for their next flight.

Next up was Simple Plan who belted out beloved hits and awesome b-side tracks. Their performance for Perfect started of with acoustic guitar and that is just grand. Listening to Welcome to My Life, live is something one should hear. Oh during their performance their guitarist was flicking guitar picks and Serge has one.

After all said and done, SINGFest brings us Travis. If there is a God, Travis is God. Out of the many bands that played tonight, they changed their guitars like soiled underpants. Their performance for Sing started off with a banjo-esque equipment. Great day.
The top 5 bands for Day 1 in no particular order, Lost Prophets, Travis, Simple Plan, New Found Glory and Crown King
On Day 2, Serge arrived late… but the amount of crowd that was there was twice as much as what they had on Day 1. According to their statistics, Day 1 = 3000++ participants and Day 2… go figure.

First play was by Stacie Orrico and her songs was of the balladic nature. The crowd is plenty and Serge had trouble getting a good spot. Trying to pull of a Mariah is never good though she has a certain vocal range which reminds Serge of TLC. And why was the strobe lights switch on during the afternoon ? No one knows.

Jamie Scott is next and again… balladic tunes. Alto-esque voice with some Rod Stewardness. His dance number had the 60’s swing music of which Michael Buble comes into mind.

One Republic came next and they should have been the main performers. Apologize and Stop & Stare was played and they are good. Their B-track which they perform is something, the crowd went while during Stop & Stare.

Panic At The Disco was next and Mr. Technical Problem came and said hello to them twice. First vocal was blank and got drown by the music. Then it became to bassy and at one point the only instrument that we could hear was the bass guitar and the drum. Only on their 4th song was it proper and they close by playing the first two songs at the start of their performance.

Ahh Jason Mraz, fine performance you have made by making the crowd follow you. Camwhore is what Serge was about to call you as you had the polaroid in your hand but instead you took photos of your band and flick them to the crowd and this is his 1st time here.

[levis fashion show again no comment or proper images]

Next up is the rickrolling Rick Astley. About 4 thrown panties on to the stage and a dirty-purple bra. His opening sentence to the crowd, “Who the hell wears a tie and a suit on a stage like this?” while lying down on the stage. Never Gonna Give You Up was played. Man, only the old people knew about him. Makes Serge old.

Next was the Pussycat Dolls and for the love of all that is good about them is their sexy clothes and sex appeal. Yet at the end of the day this is the worst act EVER!. They should go and fuck themself silly with their high heels. Frigging clubbing techno music.

Now the final act is something. For the first time in Singapore…we were given Alicia Keys. Serge was there and by the Goddess of Hera, she is hot and Serge would just love to tickle her ivories. So many things that Serge would like to say about her performance but Alicia Keys just takes his breathe away… not to mention his pen ran out of ink and thus he could not write anymore.
Following day he got back to Malaysia and began work the next day. Proper updates on Serge’s life… later.
