Repeat of the past ?
By Serge Norguard. Filed in Personal |(CNN) — A powerful earthquake (7.3 Richter scale) hit off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra island Monday (25th February 2008) afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Web site reported. … The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a local tsunami watch, but none has been reported.
Although there has been no news of any tsunami yet, one has to wonder what will happen if a tsunami did happen again. The last time the Indonesians experienced a tsunami was about 2 years ago on the 19th of December 2007, a week before Christmas and that caused 4 people to die, 7 heavily injured and 25 lightly injured (source).
The total cost of repairs was in the billions. The citizens of Malaysia was affected too, especially those living in the northern states’ Penang for one as the island suffered major floods thanks to the tsunami.
If the tsunami did happen, Serge feels that the people on the Sumateran island will be hit hard and bad. Though 2 years has passed, it takes a long time to build up and with a country where poverty is high and the political standings are at an all time low, a tsunami will be the hardest blow ever to them. It will be a turning point for both the people and the government.
Now let’s just say that the after effect of the tsunami comes into play, Penang will share a bit of Sumatera’s fate and this will be the time where the groups of people who wants to win the upcoming elections will need to do what is needed. Serge believes that this will show the strength of the leaders as well as the people. Although it is sad and cruel to ask for a tsunami to hit any country, sometimes a burning bush is needed to turn around a nation.
