[B31] Children with Disabilities
By Serge Norguard. Filed in Blogathon, Personal, Relationship/Romance |Babies are all born innocent. And then we mould them into shapes similar to ours. I am especially concerned with the type of moulds we use on children with disabilities. Parents tend to be over protective to the point of suffocating them with excessive loving and pampering.
It is not a bad thing to love and pamper but a disabled child needs to learn and grow up in an open environment. They need to learn to socialise and interact with society because this will be the environment that they will be living in when the parents and family are no longer able to protect them.
In the course of my work, I have met with people who have been disabled all their lives who are unable to think for themselves through no fault of their own. They were brought up by parents and families who decided what was best for them. These people became dependent on their families for even the simplest of decisions.
The most important thing families can give to disabled children is to instill confidence in them. They should be encouraged to think and decide for themselves. They should be encouraged to be independent. This is to prepare them for the day when they have to journey through life by themselves.
