a thing to remember

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004
THE wrath of nature and the power of the elements cannot be underestimated. Nor ignored. Malaysia may sit just outside the Pacific Ring of Fire but it was not spared the impact from the fourth-largest earthquake of the past century, which occurred off Sumatra. Gigantic tidal waves, or tsunamis, that rolled across the region caught many countries unprepared because they rarely occur in the Indian Ocean. So there are no early warning systems in place.

Because we are not in an earthquake-prone zone, the tremors felt two hours earlier did not immediately translate into a warning to evacuate the coast. At our holiday island resorts, it was just another lazy Sunday morning to enjoy the sea.

This is a natural disaster of tragic proportions for our country and others in the region even more severely hit. We share in the anguish of those who have lost their loved ones

In times like this, we see the heroism of the common people, we see the dedication of our rescue personnel, and we see the heart-warming gestures of volunteers who console grieving families by distributing food and drinks. We do not point fingers or apportion blame.
being Serge

Saturday, December 25th, 2004

who would have known ? actually serge should have gozaru. through bitter pain impaled into this heart of his, he blogs about the happening that may change the future of his life to come.

being a thinker of both philosophy, religious and all things physical and metaphysical…serge died. after months and months of hiding, he finally revealed to the upper law about his inadequacies in the faith which he has come into. it is not that he is turning away from his god, it’s just that he is looking in another direction.

god is god, religion is a way we humans interact and venerate our god. for god is one and all, the alpha and the omega. with the thoughts of the upper powers being an open minded person, serge told his theory. that is when the gates of hell broke lose. you see, the upper powers seem to be highly sensitive to the religious items which serge speaks about.

the upper powers believes that because of this mindset, accidents has befallen upon serge. it hurts him so much to find out how backward the upperpowers really is. resting for awhile in the workplace where he is right now, serge hopes that the upper powers understands him and understands that serge is still serge. and that no one can change the way he thinks.

the censorship

Saturday, December 25th, 2004

First of all let Serge says sorry to Nadira. Thanks to the rain and the bad copper wiring in the area of my place, the connection got screwy. Anyway now with that settled, let us talk about things worth talking about.

Serge is not sure if many of you read the MalayMail, but recently in the Buzz section, they interviewed and wrote an interesting article about the indie films which was produced by our malaysian people. Which i am quite proud about. The young director, Yasmin Ahmad made her debut with the film called Rabun. With no violence, sex or anything bad in it, the malaysian censorship board decided to cut it. The reason being that one of the scene, shows an old couple who loves each other..bathing each other. There was no nudity, nothing sexual about it.

It was true love being invoked in that scene, Serge knows as he watched the film already. Besides, in the kampungs where having a room to bathe in is quite rare. You can see communal bath with ease. People bathing in the river, family, friends, young and old. With this going on everyday in real life, one begins to wonder why was it censored. Serge still dont get it. It’s just a bathing scene.

Next in her line of works is this film called Sepet, depicting the tale of inter-cultural love. Between a chinese boy and a malay girl. Serge have not seen the movie yet, but with rave review from my fellow mates on the indie movie scene..it sounds good.

Anyway according to the article in the Buzz it got cut then it got a total ban. Reasons of the ban are as follow

1- Malay girl with a Chinese boy

2-
But one committee member’s contention was that Yasmin didn’t raise the issue of religion; he also asked why the Malay girl didn’t try to convert her Chinese boyfriend. He said it would please the Malay audience if the Chinese boy becomes a Muslim at the end of the story
3-a scene where a group of girls were combing each other hairs.

4-the malay girl in a non-halal restaurant.

hmm,now Serge does not see anything wrong. First of all a malay girl and a chinese boy together, what is wrong with that ? Serge used to date a malay girl and an indian girl before. His parents didnt mind, even their parents didn’t. Besides, if Serge looks into his heritage, which is quite spectacular…my racial background consist of 80% chinese 10%malay 5%indian and 5%portuguese.

The religious part, is quite weird. Having malay heritage, Serge has learn parts of the Quran and with relatives who celebrate the faith of Islam, they themselves have told me that Islam does not force people to convert.
On his deathbed, the Prophet issued a directive: “Observe scrupulously the protection accorded by me to non-Muslim subjects.”(cf. al’Mawardi) The Prophet has expressed his utmost disapproval of any mistreatment accorded to non-Muslims population in an Islamic state. He says: “Whoever oppresses the non-Muslim subjects, shall find me to be their advocate on the Day of Judgment (against the oppressing Muslims).” (Abu Dawud) His inspiring last sermon, before passing away, reflects the nobility and grace of the Prophet’s thoughts and the beauty of the language he spoke. He advised for the faith in Allah, non-aggression and rising above the considerations of race, color and origin. He made an impassioned plea for the observance of human rights enjoined by Islam, a fair deal to women and the freeing of slaves.
in the part of the girls combing each other hair, that is stupid. According to the article,
His complaint – that scene would encourage Malay women to go back to their bad old habit of picking each other’s lice!
. Hello people !!, we are not dumb nor are we stupid.

The restaurant part to Serge is hilarious. So if a malay girl cant enter a non-halal restaurant, does that mean a chinese-christian person such as Serge cannot enter an islamic restaurant ? come on. be sensible. His malay friends has joined him for dim sum before, they enjoyed the halal food which was serve to them.

There are a lot of things that is weird, but this is just plain stupid.

[edit] just read Yasmin’s Blog , it seems that film Sepet will not be ban but a lift on one of the cuts will be made. But with that much of cuts…Yasmin’s producer will not show it.
My producer’s verdict: This is a deliberate insult. To us, to our film, to Mingguan Malaysia, to the Malay Mail, and to you. If they’re not going to let up on at least some of the rest of the cuts, we just won’t release it here. Full stop. We’ll gun for Indonesia instead, so help us God.
With too many cuts, the storyline will be disrupted. Hopefully with his l337 skillz he can get to watch the film.

Friday, December 17th, 2004

Windows-XP has a “feature” (???) with which it is possible to manually crash a system by simply holding the right CTRL key and pressing the “Scroll Lock” key twice. This feature can be turned on by the following steps:

1. Start regedit. (If you are unfamiliar with regedit, please refer to this FAQ)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Paramete rs

3. Create a new DWORD value and name it CrashOnCtrlScroll
4. Right-click on this newly created value and click on Modify
5. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click on OK.
6. Close regedit and reboot your system.
7. Now you can blue screen (crash) your system by holding the right CTRL key and pressing “Scroll Lock” twice.

Note:

Your system may reboot or show a blue screen whenever this crash is initiated. If your system reboots after initiating the crash, and you want to see the blue screen, follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel > System

3. Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
4. Under System failure, uncheck the option Automatically restart.

Happy crashing…
